Niles you give me too much credit that and I wrote it for a teen magazine but here it is
David Bowie has been around forever it seems from the psychedelic sound of The man who sold the world to the hard rocking Rock and Roll suicide. Sadly most young people have no idea who this legend of music is with the exception of the three songs you hear on the radio Changes, Watch that Man, and Fame. This is a truly pitiful selection of this man's musical skills. My personal favorites are Young American and Rebel, Rebel but he is really worth looking into if you like a touch of weird in your music. Don't look for a specific style of music with Bowie though he is all over the map so to speak. If you purchase CD's I would advise either the Rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust or Bowie at the Beeb. If download music try The man who sold the World, The Width of a Circle, Sons of the Silent age, and Young American then decide David Bowie Hero or has been.

I have good news and bad news...as always it seems (May have to write a poem about that) the good news is I am now on medication for my depression and as much as I hate taking meds this is worth it for the first time in a decade my shoulders don't hurt. The bad news is the side effect, because I don't have typical aches and pains weighing me down I have more energy than I know what to do with and it's driving me absolutely mad. Plus my mouth hurts because there is a strange object on my face, no it's not braces I don't think I've really smiled with the exception of a bemused grin in 6-7 years but it's like a complete identity loss I don't recognize my own mind

There is only one form of musc I don't like and you guys, apologies to any female members can't rap with drums and guitars other than that it's merely that I am a lyrical listener when the music is not large and complex and most modern music has no lyrical content whatsoever therefor I do not find it as interesting and since I have started listening to Warren Zevon I have found even most classic rock dull there are a few exceptions such as David Bowie particularly during his Ziggy Stardust phase and John Mellencamp but I find very little in the way of music repulsive. I finished it took me so long because my CD player dunged the bed and took me three days to finish my bedroom up enough to have time to read it but it ROCKS and Niles you lied it made sense the entire time nothing there threw me for a loop or even though it is a good story and makes you think thankfully I've done a lot of thinking on the topics presented here but good story, well written, and well a classic friends or goals scenario.

two things one, Armas the big one is where Tam is located It covers the entire southern peninsula up to the Charon river. Two, I hate the Library search system I spent 30 minutes looking for Greek mythology and over half of it is considered juvenile literature. The reason I was searching for it is well two reasons I plan on doing a pantheon change which I will post here 'cuz it's gonna be AWESOME and two I need new minor artifacts for Zomrar, I never really went there and well I have Elwin slaughtering Frost Giants there in the near future, so MWAHAHAHAHAHA It should be an interesting month

Ok where I said I don't have it planned out I was wrong I developed these characters so well I have things planned out just on personality and expected reactions. The only new characters until chapter 8 are Fansy who only appeared in a short two page story as basically a "walk-on" character and one of the assassins who replaced the retiring Ren'uk Jabbak two years before this story takes place the rest have been major players in at least one story.

I like that you put in a warning about weak stomachs. Niles is right that it gets right up to the line. However, if you are being accurate in your description, I think it should stand. And I'm incredibly impressed with your writing. Wow! The Tammanian Peach factoid stood out to me because as a librarian, I like some "fact" mixed in with the fantasy.
I agree with Niles on the suggestion about the "why" of it all. You could provide exposition of your thoughts on why characters do and say what they do. For example, I always enjoy a discussion of what makes Naruto tick and how Gaara became what he is in season 3.
Does that make sense?

This story is really just a transcription of a Dungeons & Dragons adventure of mine and as for the slaughters you'll have to explain what you mean as I'm not sure I get it. But as for the slaughters themselves it was a ploy to be as offensive as possible and I toned it down to about one tenth of it's original EBIL and yeah you don't want to know what happened to the corpses.

i'm extremely impressed. i think it's incredible that you've got this much story already mapped out.
i think "the reign of boar the butcher" is right on the pc line. i'm glad you didn't go into what happens with the corpses.
can i make a suggestion though? take it or don't, because either way these stories are awesome. here goes: you might try taking some of the emphasis (without taking from the volume or brutality) of the slaughters and murders and putting some of it on the mechanics of belief and ritual and magic of this world. to me, that's what makes science fiction and fantasy writing so interesting. writers like tolkien and philip k. dick still included all the bloody stuff, but i think the reason that their names are still remembered was because of the thorough descriptions of the worlds they created. that's my suggestion. again, though, i'm very much impressed by all of this.

an observation: the most grammatical errors in your post were found in the point about grammar. irony? i think so. purposely? i wouldn't put it past ya.
seriously though, my opinion is that if a person can convey an idea that makes them an effective communicator. i could go on and on about how the fact that i used "them" instead of "him/her" is incorrect and all that (i was an english major, after all) but i think you probably understood my point. i do agree with many of your points, but i think i disagree with your sentiment.
as an example i'll use harlem rennaissance poetry. the poet/author james weldon johnson was one of the main proponents of african-american poets using proper speech and spelling in their works. this is made very clear in his early works. after having read the works of authors like langston hughes, jean toomer and others, however, he changed his view. johnson's collection of poems, "god's trombones," illustrates this change. he began using the vernacular instead of the proper; meaning, he wrote how it sounded rather than writing the correct form.
i'll agree with you that in writing people should take more care to spell correctly and put commas where they're supposed to be. but i think it's even more important, especially as a reader/listener, to be able to look past that and understand the intended meaning.
in conclusion, i'll say this: yoo am rite an convinsing argyumant.

When I'm not trying to catch up on so much work from having been on leave, I'll write more. However, I will say that for me effective communication is more important than correct grammar. As a customer service provider, we have an expression that sums it up "Being right is not always right". If I make a customer uncomfortable by speaking grammatically and perhaps so that the person may not know the words I've used, I haven't done well even if literally correct. I change the way I speak to suit abilities of the listener--as a form of empathy. We should set good examples and not talk down to people though. There is a fine line between communicating effectively at someone's level and giving in to the "lowest common denominator". As in all things, balance is my goal--Letting others feel comfortable talking to me at their level and maintaining integrity of my intelligence.
For the record, I agree with you about dictionaries and "ad-ver language". We need way more of the former and way less of the latter. I have a very large, wonderfully old dictionary that lives on our coffee table. It has served as an arguement settler for many, many Scrabble games.

You know...it's interesting about this poem because you did make several typos. Yet, somehow, they actually make your point about art. It's kinda cool (come on Michael, you've got to admit poetic license here)
The word "horibly" really does it for me particularly.
So Peter, may I ask if you had a particular inspiration for this one? Did you see something that made you think of art? (did I mention that I was intensely curious about other's writings?)

You could try writing a limerick. Limericks are all about funny.
Limerick "a kind of humorous verse of five lines, in which the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines, which are shorter, form a rhymed couplet"

I don't mind some jokes, but make them your own.
Look at Dr. Seuss. He made up words just to fit a rhyme. I like that.
Also, I am gonna have to take out the "yo mama joke". Remember, Niles and I like our mama's a bunch.

Hi All, This is a repost in my attempt to put this kind of information in the same place for easier reading:
That's a very good question. I think you should get an ticket for each poem, short story, essay, creative writing you submit. Now, that doesn't mean, I'm giving you a ticket if you write "Rose are Red, Violets are blue" over and over! Try to contribute some writings that are meaningful to you and that you want to share with others. Remember that this is a public wiki. Anyone can see what we are writing. You wouldn't want to write anything that your parents should not see. In fact, Niles and I have the awesome ability and responsibility to edit anything that would we wouldn't want our mothers to see. So, to sum up, you get a ticket for each piece of quality writing that you submit. Look at what your fellow ETC-ers are writing and see what you can come up with. Last week was Teen Read Week and the theme was LOL at the Library. Perhaps you could write something funny. I would be interested to read it.
Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Is now also being published by the American Poetry Society in their next Amateur Poets Compilation. Hi Michael,
It sounds intriguing. My only real suggestion at the moment is that you might want to divide up the action a little more with commas. Commas can change the pace of the sentence and alter the meaning (if you want that). Just a thought.
All right, I have a second suggestion:
I like the giants bad guys. It might be cool to physically describe them a little more.
For instance, "How do you think he'll taste boys?..." The threat was punctuated by the way the giant toyed with the ax at his side--jiggling it back and forth with the butt of his hand. He seemed poised for blood.
Ok, don't use my words because it's a *very* rough suggestion. I am simply interested in knowing a little more about the giants.
You've got a great start. And a good chance at the prize, but you don't need me to tell you that because all you have to do is look at the number of entries :-)

Wow Michael,
I absolutely love this! Not just because I'm hungry for dinner either.
They have not invented the sharp cheddar of my dreams yet, but I keep hoping.
How about Gouda. Goat Gouda.
If you write a good poem about Goat Gouda....maybe I'll bring some to a ETC meeting so you can try it. It's worth an ode.
Oh yeah, and the writing was good too. I wouldn't want the topic to overwhelm the poetry. The summer breeze line creates good imagery.

I read that the best friends are the ones you would actually fight with--because you trust the friendship enough to get mad at each other. We have now known each other for over 20 years. Yikes, I'm old. But we were 14 once.

haikus are too poetry, for instance, here is my favorite haiku of all time; it was written by a poet who called herself mother soul and used it to win a poetry slam:

is only to be written"
until i kissed him
in long poems there are extremely powerful lines or phrases or images, whereas haikus (at their best) are those extremely powerful lines or phrases or images.
and also, your haiku "juggling" is a masterpiece. i'm still laughing about it from yesterday.

i'm really really digging remembrance. i know it must have been a really rough time, but it's a really awesome poem. my favorite thing about it is the repeated phrases in the first and last lines of each stanza and then in the last stanza the way you changed them up a little was dope.
i also really liked sweet dreams. your imagery is very vivid and i especially thought the last stanza was awesome because whenever i have good dreams that happens to me.

oh, i wanted to ask, in your poem about the carefree butterfly, there seems to be a tone of longing/envy for the butterfly's ability to live a life without worry but then the last line reads as almost harsh in it's contrast with the previous four lines. i guess i'm asking was that intentional? and which interpretation is the right one?

you've successfully gotten me interested in reading redwall. now i just have to finish reading the dark tower series by stephen king, the james bond books by ian fleming, a bunch of stuff by hg wells, anne lamott's new book, q ko-chan and flcl mangas, cromartie high school mangas....but then i can get right down to reading redwall.
ps...there's a comic book being published monthly right now called the mice templar. it's awesome. i don't know if it's even like redwall in anyway but it's great.
