ladies and germs! welcome to the third installment of niles' world famous, "What Niles is Reading"!!! this week, we'll be looking at a science fiction book set in the distant future. i hope you enjoy it as much as i have.

Uglies, by Scott Westerfield, revolves around a fifteen and a half year old girl named Tally Youngblood. Tally is ugly; but only for three more months. then she'll be sixteen, she'll get the operation that will make her pretty like every other sixteen year old, and she'll be with her best friend Paris again. but for now Tally will have to be content hanging out with her new friend Shay, sneaking out to the old "Rusty Ruins" on their hover boards and playing around on pretty simulators to see what they'll look like as pretties. Shay doesn't want to be pretty, though. in fact, Shay runs away a few weeks before her birthday (which is the same as Tally's, coincidentally) to a place called "The Smoke" so that she doesn't have to get the operation. Tally doesn't understand why Shay would want to be ugly forever, but is excited to have the operation herself. On her sixteenth birthday, in the waiting room of the surgical center, she is taken by a government group called "Special Circumstances" to a secret facility and given a choice: she can work with Special Circumstances to find her friend Shay and The Smoke, or she can live as an ugly forever. Tally decides this isn't really a choice at all and sets off to find her friend. when she does, however, everything changes and her life, perspective, and priorities are turned completely upside down after she learns a horrific secret about what it means to become "pretty."
this book has had me on the edge of my seat, literally (because i've been listening to it in my car). there are so many twists in the plot that as soon as you think you've got it figured out there's something new thrown in for good measure. it's one of the better sci fi books i've read. but it's only the first in the "Uglies" series. "Pretties" is the sequel, followed by "Specials," and most recently, "Extras." i plan on reading all these books as it has become one of my new favorite series.
see ya next time!
niles aka pretty ugly extra special =)
Niles hold me a copy of the audio version when you're done with it, Pleasseeee.
you got it...or, rather...you'll have it
You almost done with that book yet
hey!
i am done with it. it'll be here for ya.
ps...starting tomorrow it'll be here =)
I finished it took me so long because my CD player dunged the bed and took me three days to finish my bedroom up enough to have time to read it but it ROCKS and Niles you lied it made sense the entire time nothing there threw me for a loop or even though it is a good story and makes you think thankfully I've done a lot of thinking on the topics presented here but good story, well written, and well a classic friends or goals scenario.
Oh and the girl on the cover of the book when opened is kind cute having a cute girl on the cover always helps. I alomost forgot the orchids remind me of the pretties or at the very least specials
